The Kowloon Walled City was a self-sufficient city complex located in Hong Kong. Originally built by the British, it saw a major increase in population after World War II. Many lived happily in the tight-knit community, although it was extremely overcrowded with residents and squatters. Much of the building was not designed by architects and had poor plumbing and ventilation crisscrossed with a maze of subsurface alleys and stairways. This 6.4-acre area held thousands of people at any one point, who lived and operated independently from the Hong Kong government. The local Triad gangs used this to their advantage, commonly operating illegal gambling, prostitution and drug transactions without fear of punishment. In 1987 the Hong Kong government began to evict residents and finished demolishing the city-state in 1994.

One entire alleyway managed to obtain artifact qualities. It was discovered one particular section of the building was unwilling to be toppled or removed without its approval. In fact, it seemed to pull nearby objects towards it to strengthen its power. Satellite dishes, rain barrels, television sets, antenna, clothes lines, signs, pipes, scaffolding, mattresses, electric wiring, pipes, awnings and chairs all became pulled into the alley and became part with it.

Touching any articles in the alley or disturbing the structure itself will unleash its power. The alley will replicate and modify itself repeatedly, connecting each sequence on to the original to form a twisting maze with no apparent organization. Sectors will appear to move and combine with each other when least expected. During use, the maze will become populated with realistic light displays of former residents. Although most mean no harm, the criminal element will attack the victim if they feel their territory is being threatened. The user is unable to attack or defend themselves from any blows. The only way to escape is to find the original alleyway and exit it, which will cause all constructs to dissipate
