OriginEdit

Alexis Bidagan St. Martin was a Canadian voyageur who aided Army physician William Beaumont on his experiments on human digestion. Martin was accidentlyly shot by a musket, which formed a hole in his side. Beaumont treated the wound and afterwards made Martin sign a contract to work as his household servant and experiment. Beaumont would lower food through the hole in Martin's side into his stomach, pulling the food out to check how much food was digested in a certain amount of time.
