Origin[]

George Orwell's 1984 is about a dystopian future. The novel is set in Airstrip One (Great Britain), a province of the super state Oceania in a world of perpetual war, omnipresent government surveillance and public manipulation. Everything is dictated by a political system named English Socialism (or by the name Ingsoc in the government's created language called Newspeak) under the control of a privileged elite of the Inner Party who persecutes individualism and independent thinking as thought crimes. The main character is Winston Smith who starts to question the Ministry of Truth. When designs a plan to take down Big Brother with his lover the Thought Police capture him. Declaring his rebellious nature to be 'insanity' they torture him until they declare him sane again. Letting him go he finds his lover and sadly informs her he was too weak. She admits that she betrayed them as well. In the end Winston gives up his free will to let himself be "loved" by his government a love he returned

Martin Secker was given this copy and almost lost his publishing company as he started to run it like a dictatorship. Once the first edition was purchased he came out of the trance. Agents located the buyer and bought it back returning it to the Warehouse.
